American actor Alec Baldwin, who committed murder during the 2021 Rust movie shoot, will be charged with involuntary homicide and sentenced to up to five years in jail, according to a prosecutor's announcement on Thursday.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the movie's armorer who handled the weapon, is targeted by the same charge, according to a statement from Mary Carmack-Altwies, the Santa Fe County Prosecutor.

On October 21, 2021, while filming on a ranch in New Mexico, Alec Baldwin fired a weapon that was only supposed to hold white balls, but which instead had a real projectile that killed the 42-year-old photographer Halyna Hutchins and injured the director Joel Souza.

This exceedingly uncommon occurrence shocked Hollywood and caused a great deal of tension, leading to calls to disarm the plateaus.

From 18 months to 5 years in jail if convicted

According to Mary Carmack-Altwies, after carefully reviewing the evidence and New Mexico law, she decided that there was enough evidence to pursue criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the Rust production team.

Everyone deserves justice, she added, and nobody is above the law while I'm watching them.

The prosecutor said that the incrimination chiefs will be formally filed before the end of the month. Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed may spend up to 18 months in jail if found guilty. However, if the negligence worsened, the sentence might be increased to five years in jail.

If one of these three people—Alec Baldwin, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, or David Halls—had done their jobs, Halyna Hutchins would still be alive today. It's really as easy as that, the case's prosecutor, Andrea Reeb, said.

According to the communiqué, there was a criminal breach of security during Rust's filming. She then emphasized the amateurishness of the production and M. Baldwin's lax attitude toward the shoot on CNN.

The prosecutor believed that the actor had not taken any of the actions that were required of him to ensure his safety or the safety of others around him. Then, he raised the gun and pointed it toward Halyna Hutchins.

The acting union criticizes the armored car.

The influential Screen Actors Guild responded on Thursday, criticizing the prosecutor's incorrect and misinformed decision and asserting that an actor's job does not need them to be experts on firearms or firepower.

The industry's regulations, according to the union, require that qualified armories be in charge of shooting scenes. This person must, among other things, check each firearm and its associated equipment before each use, as well as inspect it before and after each take.

In particular, the police investigation focused on trying to ascertain how actual weapons ended up on the set, which is technically prohibited to prevent accidents.

Authorities have determined that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film's armorer, placed the weapon's ammunition into Alec Baldwin's weapon rather than a real ball.

The legal team for the armorer has, on the other hand, showing a flawed investigation and an imprecise understanding of the allegations. We want to bring the truth to light, and we believe that a jury will find Hannah innocent of all wrongdoing.

According to Alec Baldwin's attorney, there was a legal error.

Alec Baldwin's lawyer responded to his client's admission of guilt by denouncing a horrible legal error.

According to Luke Nikas, this decision denigrates Halyna Hutchins' tragic death and is a grave legal error. M. Baldwin had no reason to believe that a real ball was actually in the weapon, or anywhere else on the set.

The actor told CNN in August that he was waiting for no one to be found guilty and that he had hired a private investigator to determine who was responsible for this incident.

A wave of legal lawsuits brought by several team members emerged from the drama.

Alec Baldwin announced in October that he had reached a settlement ending the legal actions taken in the civil case by Mme Hutchins' family. The amount of this agreement was not made public. Rust's second season of filming has been scheduled for 2023.
