The official list of the safest airlines in the world for 2023

Last year, many people traveled on their first trip after the return of air traffic, which had declined due to the spread of the Corona pandemic, and 2023 will be the year that will mark the return of air traffic activity.

And if air traffic has enjoyed a “break” period during the pandemic, this means that some may feel more nervous than usual about boarding the plane, and booking with one of these airlines may reassure you.

Airline Rating analyzed 385 different airlines to find the 20 safest airlines in the world. In a separate survey, the site also collected the top 10 most cost-effective airlines as well. So, whether you are traveling in First Class or Economy Class, you will be in "good hands".

To work out the top 20, Airline Rating focused on several factors, including records of serious accidents over the past two years, government audits, age of the fleet, and of course, COVID-19 safety protocols.

What is the safest airline to fly in 2023?

Qantas topped the list thanks to its "impressive first-line record in operations and safety," which has led to its "acceptance as the most experienced airline in the field," according to the air safety rating website. The Australian airline has often topped the safety charts.

The airline missed out on first place last year, despite a crash at Perth Airport in 2018. The Boeing 737 left the runway, ran over the stop bars, and nearly crashed into a similar-model aircraft that was making a turn for takeoff.

The report on this incident was not submitted until 2020 which means it has affected the safety ratings for 2021, with Australia's Qantas dropping to seventh.

What other airlines made it into the top 20?

Air New Zealand, which won last year, is second this year. Etihad Airways came in third place, while Qatar Airways came in fourth place.

"These airlines are a standout in the industry, and are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and the launch of new aircraft," Jeffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of Airline Review, said of the website's rating.

“Our top 20 airlines in 2023 are always at the forefront of safety innovations, operational excellence, and the launch of new, more advanced aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.”
